Are you ready for a Reading Road Trip? Summer will be here before you know it and reading is the BEST way to go on an adventure…especially with gas prices being as high as they are! Your child/children will receive a Summer Reading List with their report card at the end of the semester…This list will contain some titles and authors that are enjoyable, at a variety of ability levels, and will allow the children to keep up with their reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skills during the summer months. The American Library Association has lots of other lists that may help you out…these can be found at http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/alscresources/booklists/booklists.cfm.
Does your child have a library card for the Orange County Public Library? If not, they are FREE…so stop by the South Creek Branch right behind Albertson’s Shopping Plaza on SOBT to sign up for one…They offer MANY activities, story time opportunities, computer classes, and English classes during the summer, so visit their website at http://www.ocls.info/flashDefault.asp?bhcp=1 or stop by a branch to pick up a brochure. They will also be sending flyers here to MWE very soon, so be on the lookout for them to come with your child.
We will have an incentive program for all 3rd -5th graders next school year…they can get a head start by reading and discussing some of the SSYRA nominated titles for the 2008-2009 school year…these titles will be on the summer reading list that is sent home with their report card…AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes will be available on our school computers…they will be able to take a quiz and if they pass it, that will help them to earn more rewards…Are they up to the challenge?
The votes have been counted…The students have been waiting to find out our Florida Book winners for this year….the 2008 SSYRA winner is “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” by Kate Di Camillo. Students who read at least 3 out of the 15 books had the opportunity to vote for their favorite…”Say What” by Margaret Haddix Peterson was the most popular on our campus…was it your child’s favorite…if not, what was? The 2008 FRA winner is “The Gingerbread Girl” by Lisa Campbell Ernst. The primary students came to listen to all 8 of these books here in the Media Center…”Fancy Nancy” by Jane O’Connor received the most votes here at MWE…ask them why :) !
Remember to take time to read to and with your child, as well as give them time to read on their own…as you read to them they can hear what a fluent reader sounds like…their expression will improve as they listen to you modeling for them. Have them keep a journal showing what they’ve read. They could keep a list of new works that they’ve learned, or whether they enjoyed the book or not and why…Discuss what was read, ask them to make predictions, and most importantly allow them to relate it to themselves, the world around them, or to another book. Making these connections makes reading more enjoyable (and helps them to learn at the same time)!
Our Duck, Duck, Books fundraiser continues…students may purchase duckies for $1.00 each…this sale is helping us to raise money so that we can purchase new materials for our Media Center. Thank you for your support with our Spring Scholastic Book Fair…it was a success thanks to YOU! We are always looking for volunteers, so if you’d like to help out, please contact Mrs. Parisi at 407 858 3140 x227 or at andrea.parisi@ocps.net. |
